This blog post comes from Cai Burton, our Marketing and Comms Manager. We wanted to share about the progress that we’ve made so far and where we’re going next.

I’ve been lucky enough to see Freedom of Mind develop from very small beginnings, into the reality it is now.

Freedom of Mind 2017 came and went with a bang. Another hugely inspiring week of events, debate, actions and fun. And now that the dust has settled, we’re looking at how we can move forward for the next year. The focus of Freedom of Mind so far has always been the festival. Everything builds to a point in mid October where all the hard work that we’ve put in is celebrated all at once. The feedback we get always speaks about the importance of our work. But the stigma around mental health doesn’t just vanish after one week.

The point we continually make, is that mental health affects all of us all the time. In the good times, and the bad. Whether you’re campaigning or not. Whether or not there’s a mental wellbeing festival on that week. The work we do during the festival creates change, but the full effect we hope to have, comes from constantly working, supporting and fighting for better mental health for everyone.

And so, we can’t afford to be complacent. Just because the festival was a huge success doesn’t mean that our job is done.

Freedom of Mind is still growing, still developing, and constantly adapting. And we’re looking for new ways to challenge mental health stigma every day. And so these are a few of the steps we’re taking to do that.

We want to share your story

Some of the most amazing work we’ve done is through people sharing their thoughts and opinions through our blog. We’ve had poems, videos, personal stories, podcasts and lists – all of which have offered unique insight into the lives of people willing to share their story with us. We would love for people to write or create for us – in whatever capacity you feel most comfortable – so please do email me on It’s possible for us to create a huge amount of change from simply sharing our personal experiences with others.

Volunteer with us

We’re looking to grow the team even more. In a couple of days, we’ll be releasing the details on the new voluntary positions that we have available. As part of reaching new people in new ways, bringing in some fresh eyes makes that whole process even more insightful. You could help us to continue to make change across this city.

Attend our workshops

Our brilliant workshop lead, Mark, has been hard at work designing workshops that we’re in the process of delivering. These are focussed around social media and how it affects your mental health. Also, some of the talented women in Freedom of Mind are putting on a Creative Confidence Workshop for other women in the new year. More details on all of these will be coming out soon, so keep an eye on our social media pages

We’re still only small, and though we’re making big waves, all our work is 100% voluntary. We’re currently looking to secure more funding to allow us to make bigger plans, but your donation will help towards us to continue to make a difference.

It can be anything, from a poem, to an article, to a video, to a piece of artwork – we’re just after stories to tell.
